Summer Burnout?

Summer: we picture vacations, pool days, later mornings, and more time with family. But for many adults, especially parents and working professionals, summer can bring a surprising amount of stress.

Between coordinating camps, managing childcare, planning trips, covering work responsibilities, hosting family, keeping kids entertained, and trying to “make the most” of the season, summer can quickly become less restful than expected.

If you’ve found yourself feeling more overwhelmed than refreshed, you’re not alone.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Summer Burnout

Burnout does not always look like a total breakdown. Sometimes it shows up in quieter ways, such as:

  • Feeling irritable or impatient more often than usual
  • Having trouble relaxing, even when you have downtime
  • Feeling emotionally drained or disconnected
  • Struggling to sleep or feeling tired even after rest
  • Feeling resentful about everyone needing something from you
  • Having difficulty focusing or making decisions
  • Feeling like you are “behind” no matter how much you do

If any of these sound familiar, it may be a sign that your summer schedule needs more margin.

Simple Ways to Prevent Burnout This Summer

Lower the pressure to make summer perfect

Kids often remember simple moments: playing outside, watching a movie together, or having an unhurried conversation. A calmer parent or caregiver is often more valuable than a packed calendar.

Build in recovery time after busy days

Try not to schedule every open space. If you have a full weekend, consider protecting Monday evening. If your child has a big camp week, keep the following weekend slower. Rest usually has to be planned, or it gets crowded out.

Keep a few routines consistent

Less structure is good sometimes, but a few anchors can help everyone feel more regulated. Consider keeping consistent wake times, bedtimes, meal rhythms, or quiet time. Predictability helps both adults and children feel more grounded.

Name what you need before resentment builds

Try naming your needs before you feel overwhelmed or the need to “blow up”.

For example:
“I need one evening this week with no plans.”
“I need help with camp pickup.”
“I need us to simplify dinner this week.”
“I need 30 minutes alone before we start the evening routine.”

Clear, early communication can prevent stress from turning into conflict.

A Gentle Summer Check-In

Ask yourself:

What is one thing I can take off my plate this week?

What is one small thing that would help me feel more rested?

Where am I expecting myself to do too much?

What would a “good enough” summer look like?

Sometimes small adjustments can make a significant difference in how we feel.

When Additional Support May Help

If stress, anxiety, irritability, sadness, or exhaustion are starting to affect your relationships, work, parenting, or overall wellbeing, counseling can be a helpful place to slow down and sort through what is happening.

You do not have to wait until things feel unmanageable to reach out. Support can help you better understand your needs, set healthier boundaries, and move through the season with more steadiness.

Wishing you a summer with more breathing room, more grace, and moments of true rest. Remember, we’re here to help you “JUST KEEP Growing”!
